Just Because of Who We Are" Producer: Heramedia Collective 1986, 28:00 minutes, color Just Because of Who We Are is a documentary film that addresses violence and harassment directed against lesbians. It was produced by the lesbian feminist collective Heramedia and was previously distributed by Women Make Movies. It is currently distributed by VTape, a Canadian distributor. This important film is an early example of independent queer cinema focusing on institutionalized homophobia and lesbian safety. The film features interviews with a diverse group of lesbians regarding their experiences with violence, oppression, racism, and sexism. It includes appearances by notable queer activists and writers, including Cherríe Moraga, Barbara Smith and Joan Nestle. The documentary is part of the Joan E. Biren (JEB) Queer Film Museum Collection, housed at the National Museum of American History.
